For the Sea Dogs’ staff preparations for our first Winter event, Holiday at Hadlock, are a sure sign that we need to get a move on our Christmas shopping. 2013 kicked off our third year of doing this wonderful free event, and it is definitely a staff favorite.
The decorating of our stadium starts about one week before the event and includes all of the Christmas Vacation-esque hanging of lights, checking of bulbs, putting up of trees and wrapping of presents. On the first Saturday of December we open up the stadium and offer complimentary cookies and hot chocolate and s’mores station. In addition to edible treats, we also have an arts and crafts room where kids can decorate game used baseballs, horse and wagon rides thanks to Carousel Horse Farm, The Kastaways performing in the front plaza and Party Palooga offering amazing face painting and balloon animals. Thanks to Southern Maine Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep, we also collected toys for Maine’s Toys for Tots program. The crown jewel of the day is Santa and his Elf arriving via Helicopter on Hadlock Field. Don’t believe me? See below:
The helicopter arrival definitely adds the appropriate level of drama one would expect from such a celebrity. This event also gave us a chance to showcase our new video board. Jim Heffley got very creative in creating our line up for the day:
If you missed the event this year, never fear, it is an annual event and one that we love putting on, so let’s plan on seeing you in 2014!
Immediately after this event (and I mean, immediately) most of the staff jetted off to Orlando to take part in the Baseball Winter Meetings. The Winter Meetings are always a busy week, filled with networking with other baseball people from both the Major and Minor Leagues as well as league, committee and professional development meetings. Our next post will be about our week in Orlando, including the events and the major announcement on the final day. Until then everyone drive safe and gas up the snow blowers!
